How to Apply

Application Deadline for Admission in Fall 2009: December 31, 2008.

Neuroscience is an interdisciplinary field encompassing a wide range of research questions and methodologies. Consequently, NUIN accepts students from diverse backgrounds and majors (including psychology, engineering, physics, computer science, and chemistry, as well as biology and neuroscience). Nevertheless, it is expected that all incoming students, regardless of major or research interests, will have a solid grounding in the basic sciences (biology, chemistry, physics) as well as calculus-level mathematics, either through formal courses or as a result of significant research experience. Applicants with less experience in any of these areas should plan to take a few undergraduate-level courses during their first year in the program or, ideally, to take such courses prior to entering graduate school.

All successful applicants are expected to have research experience.

Entering NUIN students receive a University Fellowship and are fully supported (including tuition, stipend, and health insurance) their first year.  The expectation is that all NUIN students in good standing will continue to receive full support for the duration of their graduate studies.  The NUIN stipend for 2008-09 is $26,250.  First year students also receive $500 for moving expenses.

Submitting your application

All applicants are required to fill out our on-line application. The Apply Yourself on-line application will be available after October 6, 2008. It may be found at Electronic Application (https://app.applyyourself.com/?id=nwu-grad) or follow this link: - APPLY ONLINE

The application fee is $75 and must be paid via credit card at the time of application submission.  Your application will not be processed without payment of the fee.

We require the general GRE test for all applicants. No subject test is required.

Please request ETS to send your scores to Northwestern University's code for all electronically submitted test scores (ETS):
1565.

International students must provide official scores for either the TOEFL or IELTS exam. The test must be taken no more than two years before the intended quarter of entry.  For the TOEFL, you must score 600 or higher on the paper-based test, 250 or higher on the computer-based test, 100 or higher on the internet based test.  For the IELTS, you must receive a score of 7.0 or higher.
Students taking the paper-based TOEFL should reference department code 01. This will ensure that the TOEFL scores are sent to The Graduate School. IBT test takers should request that their scores be sent to the graduate office and then select the program name or option 99. Please use the University code - - 1565.

The TOEFL may be waived if the student has completed a two or four year degree from an institution where the primary language is English.

All supporting documents, including transcripts for all schools listed on the application and letters of recommendation (NUIN requires 3), should be submitted to Jo Atkinson at jo-atkinson@northwestern.edu.

Applications should be received by mid-December, and no later than December 31, so they can be processed in time for our early January review. Applications will not be accepted after December 31, though supporting documents (letters of recommendation, transcripts, and such) may be sent later provided the on-line application is complete by December 31. Sending supporting material late will slow the review of your application.
